Study finds household dogs may boost infants' immune health

Research from Finland shows that babies raised with a dog experience fewer fevers, ear infections and reduced antibiotic use, likely due to microbial exposure from the pet.

A Finnish research team collected household dust from homes that kept dogs and compared the microbial composition with health records of roughly 368 infants. They identified eight dog-origin microbes that appeared to protect babies from common ailments, including fever and ear infections, and to lessen the need for antibiotics. Notably, the presence of Collinsella in the home environment was linked to longer periods of health, and pasteurella was tied to shorter fever episodes.

Lead pediatrician Jenni Mäki noted that dog ownership already modifies home microbiota in a health-promoting way, hinting at future possibilities for microbiome engineering. Chief researcher Anne Karvonen warned that early-life respiratory infections raise later risks of asthma and other chronic conditions, so reducing these infections through pet-associated microbes could have lasting benefits. The findings add to broader evidence that early microbial exposure supports immune development and may also improve children’s behavior and social skills.
