Study links faster biological aging in youth to rising early-cancer rates

Researchers have found that younger generations are aging biologically faster than their calendar age, a trend that may explain the surge in cancers among people under 50.

Recent reports from the German Cancer Research Center and U.S. researchers document a notable increase in cancers, especially gastrointestinal, among individuals in their twenties and thirties. A new study from Washington University School of Medicine links this trend to a widening disparity between chronological and biological ages, meaning younger people are biologically older than their years suggest. Analyzing over 150,000 UK Biobank participants and more than 10,000 U.S. subjects, the researchers observed that cohorts born after the 1960s exhibit the largest age gaps and higher early-onset cancer risk.

While the study is correlational, experts like Ron Jachimowicz and Tanwei Yuan note that factors such as early-life obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and excessive screen time may accelerate biological aging. They recommend conventional health measures—exercise, balanced diet, adequate sleep, and social engagement—to mitigate risk, though half of biological age is thought to be genetically predetermined. The findings underscore the need for earlier screening and further research into biological-age metrics.
