Study links occupational pesticide exposure to up to 71% higher ALS risk

A new analysis finds that workers exposed to pesticides face a 61-71% increased chance of developing ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease.

An international review of ALS studies over the last 35 years revealed that individuals encountering pesticides in their work have a 61-71% higher likelihood of being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis compared with unexposed peers. The association strengthens with greater exposure, and men in particular exhibited double the risk. Among pesticide types, herbicides were most strongly linked, with glyphosate—a common weed killer—implicated in neuronal communication disruption and inflammation.

The research emphasizes farmworkers, pesticide mixers, greenhouse employees and others who may absorb large doses through skin contact or inhalation. These results join prior research connecting pesticide exposure to a range of health issues, raising concerns about chemical safety in agriculture.
