Study Shows Ant Brain Signals Linking Hunger to Parental Care Evolved Across Species
Researchers discovered that two neuropeptides in clonal raider ants toggle between caregiving and foraging, linking ancient hunger circuits to parenting behavior.
In a Nature paper, scientists examined clonal raider ants and identified neuropeptide F and allatostatin A as opposing regulators of social role: the former encourages nursing of larvae, the latter stimulates foraging. Younger ants naturally exhibit higher F and lower A, a pattern that reverses with age, mirroring the colony's division of labor. Experimental boosting or suppressing each peptide switched individual ants between caregiving and food-searching behaviors.
Starvation raised F and lowered A, making ants act more like caregivers, while feeding produced the opposite effect. The researchers note that similar neuropeptides modulate parental care in mammals, hinting at a shared biological blueprint. Future work will map the exact neural circuits involved, potentially illuminating how complex social behaviors arise in diverse animals.
