Teen with extensive record arrested for alleged double homicide of Citadel cadet and friend

A 17-year-old with a long criminal record was taken into custody after authorities linked him to the July 29 shooting that killed Citadel cadet Dustin Rose and his friend Samson Campbell.

DeLand police discovered the bodies of Citadel cadet Dustin Rose and his friend Samson Campbell on the night of July 29, prompting an arrest warrant for a 17-year-old male. The teenager, whose record includes assault with a deadly weapon, battery, drug possession and other offenses dating back to 2021, was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service on Wednesday. Sheriff Mike Chitwood argued that the youth avoided meaningful punishment because the Ninth Judicial Circuit’s state attorney, Monique Worrell, failed to prosecute earlier cases.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier echoed the criticism, labeling the prosecutor’s actions as negligent. The suspect faces two counts of second-degree murder and is likely to be tried as an adult, while his father was arrested for felony accessory after the fact. Rose’s mother described her son as the “light” of the family, and Campbell’s aunt said the victims had traveled to DeLand to scatter a pet’s ashes before the tragedy.
