Texas grid faces near-doubling of power demand by 2032, officials say

ERCOT’s latest outlook, presented to the Texas Senate Business and Commerce Committee, forecasts peak statewide demand of roughly 175,000 MW by 2032, nearly twice the record set last week. The surge is attributed to a rapid influx of data centers, continued population growth and expanding industrial activity. While the surge in solar generation—now contributing up to 45% of output—and record-setting battery discharge have helped meet recent summer peaks, officials stress that additional natural-gas capacity will be required for evening hours when solar wanes.
The council’s CEO Pablo Vegas and PUC chair Thomas Gleeson highlighted a 20,000 MW buffer that allowed the grid to serve the recent record without conservation orders. ERCOT is overhauling its demand-forecasting system after an earlier projection of 367,790 MW proved unrealistic. State programs such as the Texas Energy Fund are being tapped to finance new gas plants, while the growing pipeline of solar and battery projects in the generation queue promises to shift peak-stress periods later into the day.
