The Dark Doodad Nebula and NGC 4372 Shine in Tonight's Southern Sky

The Dark Doodad Nebula, a dense interstellar dust cloud, traverses the southern sky and is a favored target for binocular stargazers focusing on the diminutive Musca constellation, also known as the Fly. Covering an area of about three degrees, its dark outline is intersected near the southern tip by the yellow-hued globular cluster NGC 4372, a background object residing roughly 20,000 light-years away in the Milky Way’s halo.
The nebula itself lies approximately 700 light-years from Earth and stretches more than 30 light-years, forming part of the potentially star-forming Musca molecular cloud. The playful moniker “Dark Doodad” was first introduced in 1986 by astro-imager and writer Dennis di Cicco during observations of Comet Halley from the Australian outback. This celestial pairing offers both amateur and professional astronomers a vivid illustration of dust clouds against rich star fields just south of the Coalsack Nebula and the Southern Cross.
