Thousands Gather in Gaza City for Mass Funeral of 112 Victims
Around Gaza City, thousands attended a large funeral for 112 members of the Hassayna and Abu Sharia families whose bodies were recovered from a collapsed building after an Israeli strike in November 2023.
Gaza's civil defence concluded a two-week effort to dig through the rubble of a destroyed residential building in the Sabra neighbourhood, uncovering the remains of 112 individuals from the Hassayna and Abu Sharia families, among them more than 40 children. The victims had been killed when an Israeli air raid flattened their homes in November 2023. On Tuesday, thousands of mourners marched through Gaza City, bearing the bodies draped in Palestinian flags, in what local outlets described as one of the largest funerals since the conflict erupted in October 2023.
The gathering served as a platform for families to renew claims that Israel committed war crimes in Gaza. They also urged the global community to launch investigations into this attack and the many other bodies believed to remain buried beneath the city's ruins.
Why it matters
The funeral highlights ongoing civilian suffering in Gaza and intensifies calls for accountability over alleged war crimes.
