Three steps to turn Europe into a bioengineering leader
A group of experts urges the EU to adopt a focused bioengineering agenda that builds academic excellence, funds bioengineers, and streamlines regulation.
Europe lags in bioengineering, with fewer than ten autonomous departments compared with over a hundred in the United States and China, and modest venture funding. To close the gap, a coalition of 25 specialists met in Heidelberg and outlined a three-pillar strategy for the European Council and EU bodies. First, they recommend establishing dedicated bioengineering faculties at leading universities, supported by coordinated funding and curricula that blend engineering, mathematics, and ethics.
Second, they call for the creation of bioengineering-specific grant programs and review panels within the EU research framework, alongside incentives for industry and venture-capital participation. Third, they suggest streamlined regulatory routes to accelerate the clinical rollout of new technologies. The authors contend that these measures would generate homegrown expertise, attract global talent, and position Europe as a competitive hub for medical innovation.
