Tim Hortons faces LGBTQ+ criticism over Harry Potter tie-in with J.K. Rowling

Tim Hortons' new Harry Potter menu sparked swift condemnation from LGBTQ+ groups who say partnering with author J.K. Rowling conflicts with Canadian inclusivity.

Tim Hortons announced a Harry Potter celebration featuring special food items, merchandise, and a chance to win a London trip, timed with the series’ 25th-year film anniversary. The promotion quickly drew ire from the 2SLGBTQ+ community, with Egale Canada asserting that the brand should reflect Canada’s inclusive values and criticizing the link to J.K. Rowling, whose recent remarks are considered anti-trans.

Social media users urged a boycott, labeled the chain “TERF-Hortons,” and expressed personal hurt, including a transgender employee. Tim Hortons defended the effort as a tribute to a beloved story, and its chief marketing officer Hope Bagozzi expressed excitement for Canadian guests. Rowling’s publicist refused to comment, and the rollout begins on Aug. 12 across more than 4,000 Canadian locations.

Why it matters

It shows how corporate ties to controversial figures can spark cultural backlash and impact brand perception in Canada.
