Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, displays a full suite of weather phenomena—clouds, methane rain, flowing rivers and seasonal dunes—mirroring Earth’s climate but on a vastly stretched timeline. Because Saturn orbits the Sun once every 29 Earth years, Titan’s four seasons each extend for about 7.5 Earth years, a fact derived from the planet’s 27-degree axial tilt. Data from the Cassini spacecraft and the Huygens lander showed deep northern lakes of liquid methane that can dry up seasonally, and dunes near the equator that shift direction by roughly 23 degrees as wind patterns evolve.
Researchers such as Shannon MacKenzie and Alice Le Gall suggest subsurface infiltration and increased soil moisture explain these changes. The persistence of methane in Titan’s dense, nitrogen-rich atmosphere remains a major mystery highlighted by Jonathan Lunine. Beneath its icy crust, Titan likely harbors a global ocean of water mixed with ammonia, kept liquid by antifreeze properties.
