Toddler Hospitalized After Bear Attack on Maple Ridge Backyard

Maple Ridge RCMP reported that a bear entered a backyard on 240 Street near 124 Avenue at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, attacking a three-year-old girl who was playing on the deck. A parent intervened and forced the bear to retreat, after which the child was evacuated by air ambulance due to her young age. Police noted the animal showed a high level of interest in the area, returning several times while officers were on scene.

Around noon, officers encountered the bear and discharged a firearm to protect public safety, after which the animal fled into nearby woods. The girl is hospitalized with non-life-altering injuries, and a B.C. Conservation Officer Service predator attack team is now tracking the bear. Residents have been advised to remain indoors and contact the conservation service if they see the animal.
