Toronto police to brief media on latest U.S. consulate shooting

Toronto police will hold a news conference Thursday to update the public on a gunshot fired at the U.S. consulate on July 27.

On July 27, an officer stationed near the U.S. consulate in downtown Toronto heard gunfire around 4:45 a.m. and saw a white Honda Accord lacking license plates speed away from the area. Police briefly pursued the vehicle on the Don Valley Parkway near Don Mills Road before ending the chase due to safety concerns over its high speed. A single shell casing was recovered near the consulate, and the building's façade sustained damage, though the U.S. embassy reported no injuries and thanked officers for their swift action.

Deputy Chief Frank Barredo labeled the act "brazen" and "despicable," pledging a thorough investigation. This shooting is the second assault on the consulate this year; the March 10 attack involved multiple shots and a stolen car, leading to two arrests that have yet to face trial. A news conference scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. ET will provide further details, with one outlet Toronto livestreaming the briefing.

Why it matters

The incident raises security concerns for diplomatic missions and prompts a police investigation into a repeat attack.
