Tree crushes car on Mount Buller Road, killing passenger and injuring driver

A man died and a female driver was seriously hurt after a tree fell onto their car on Mount Buller Road.

Around 9:15 am on Monday, Victoria Police and Advanced Life Support paramedics arrived at Mount Buller Road after a tree collapsed onto a car traveling the route. The male passenger died at the scene, while the female driver was transported by road to Wangaratta Hospital with serious injuries to her upper body. Police have launched an investigation and closed the road in both directions, resulting in major traffic delays.

The State Emergency Service, which handled 80 assistance requests overnight, has already completed several water rescues due to the region's record rainfall. SES Hume regional duty officer Michael Isbister warned that saturated ground will cause rivers to rise quickly. A coroner’s report will be prepared following the police inquiry.
