Trump administration’s trucking sweep nets dozens of immigration arrests and safety violations
The DOT’s Operation Highway Shield, expanded from Florida to the Midwest, resulted in 51 immigration detentions, 36 English-language violations and dozens of safety actions against commercial drivers.
Operation Highway Shield, launched by the Department of Transportation under the Trump administration, started in Florida and was later extended to several Midwestern states. In total, agents conducted 3,487 stops, pulling 766 commercial vehicles or drivers out of service and filing 47 criminal charges that resulted in 39 jail sentences. The sweep also produced 51 immigration detentions and uncovered 36 violations of English language proficiency rules for truckers.
Authorities recovered three cargo thefts valued at about $1 million. Federal Motor Carrier Safety administrator Derek Barrs emphasized that English-language standards have long existed to prevent accidents, while Florida troopers highlighted frequent failures to meet those standards at weigh stations. The enforcement push follows a series of deadly crashes that officials attribute to drivers lacking legal status or proper licensing.
