Trump launches veteran-focused “Freedom Haulers” plan to curb illegal-immigrant truck drivers

The White House unveiled the Freedom Haulers program, offering veterans faster access to commercial driver’s licenses while tightening rules on non-English-speaking and undocumented truckers.

At a ceremony on West Executive Avenue, President Trump introduced the Freedom Haulers initiative, a coordinated push by the Departments of Transportation, Labor, Veterans Affairs, and War to expand veteran employment in the trucking sector. The plan extends the CDL waiver for veterans from 12 to 24 months after service and adds training for those who never drove large vehicles in the military. Indiana and Wyoming will participate in the FMCSA’s “Even Exchange” program to streamline civilian licensing for military drivers.

Werner Enterprises announced a commitment to recruit 1,400 new veteran drivers. Simultaneously, the DOT said it has revoked more than 24,000 licenses from illegal-immigrant drivers failing English-language tests and over 28,000 improperly issued to non-citizens. The effort follows a series of fatal crashes involving undocumented truckers, including a recent incident that killed a Pennsylvania State Police trooper. Officials claim veteran drivers have lower accident rates and higher mileage, suggesting the program will boost road safety and strengthen supply chains.

Why it matters

The plan aims to improve highway safety and address driver shortages by hiring veterans while removing undocumented, non-English-speaking truckers.
