Trump Order Calls for Early AI Access to Shield Critical Infrastructure

During his tenure on the House intelligence committee, the author observed that adversaries constantly seek new ways to exploit U.S. weaknesses, a challenge now intensified by artificial intelligence. The Five Eyes partnership—comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand—has warned that AI is speeding up and scaling cyber threats to governments, businesses and critical infrastructure.

Nations such as China, Russia, Iran and North Korea are pouring resources into AI to gain long-term strategic leverage. In response, President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to distribute cutting-edge AI security tools to agencies and to create a voluntary framework for AI developers to work with the government. The piece contends that this framework should be expanded to include trusted operators of utilities, telecom, banks, hospitals and other essential services, establishing a secure, tested process for early AI model access before public release, thereby allowing defenders to identify vulnerabilities before adversaries do.
