Trump pushes Senate to approve permanent daylight-saving time after House approval

President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform to appeal to Republican senators to release holds and pass the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight-saving time permanent across the United States. The bill cleared the House of Representatives with a 308-117 vote, receiving bipartisan backing, but it has not yet been considered by the Senate, where doubts persist among members of both parties. Trump cited studies linking the twice-yearly time shift to higher crime rates, traffic accidents, heart issues and seasonal depression, and claimed that a permanent shift would benefit tourism, retail, and energy costs.

Support for the measure is strongest among legislators from coastal states, whereas opposition is concentrated in the Midwest and in states with large agricultural sectors. The White House previously circulated an internal memo urging Congress to act, labeling the change as a “popular, common-sense reform.” Despite the push, the Senate’s timetable for the bill remains unclear.
