Trump's bid for Supreme Court rehearing on birthright citizenship misses deadline

Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform to argue that signs advertising paid birthright citizenship are proliferating at the southern border and nationwide, labeling the Supreme Court's June 30 decision as illegal. He urged an immediate rehearing, asserting that the ruling would devastate the nation. William and Mary law professor Jonathan H. Adler clarified that the 25-day deadline for filing a rehearing petition expired on July 25 and no such petition is listed on the Court's docket.

Under Rule 44, a rehearing request also needs backing from at least one Justice in the majority, a rarity. The Court's original opinion therefore stands. Trump and his supporters persist in citing disputed birth-tourism figures, a topic even the Solicitor General could not quantify during April oral arguments.
