TSA Union Warns Against New Privatization Plan for Airport Security
The AFGE union says the TSA’s Gold+ program will hand security screening at three airports to private contractors, ending workers’ contracts and benefits.
The Transportation Security Administration disclosed a plan called Gold+ that would shift screening responsibilities at Tampa International, Charleston and Des Moines airports to private contractors, removing existing union contracts and benefits for TSA staff. AFGE national president Everett Kelley condemned the proposal as a rollback of the security framework established after the September 11 attacks, urging congressional and public input.
The union is reviewing legal options while the agency projects the elimination of about 4,500 positions as the program expands to 220 airports. Past incidents at privately run Florida airports, including wage cuts and a knife breach, are cited as evidence of reduced safety and profit-driven motives. Deputy administrator Adam Stahl indicated future phases might incorporate artificial intelligence, and the Trump administration’s broader budget cuts could see an additional 8,400 officers removed. A TSA spokesperson said the transition aims to improve traveler experience while supporting affected employees with severance or retirement options.
