Turkish national detained in Britain on U.S. terrorism financing accusations
A 45-year-old Turkish man was taken into custody in the United Kingdom on U.S. charges alleging he helped funnel money and aid to Hamas through a purported humanitarian charity.
British authorities detained Mohammad Yousef Hasna, a 45-year-old Turkish citizen from Istanbul, on Friday pending extradition to the United States. U.S. officials allege that Hasna exploited a sham international humanitarian group to channel supplies, food and cash to Hamas, coordinating with senior Hamas leader Ghazi Hamad since at least 2023. The indictment includes three counts: conspiracy to provide material support to Hamas, conspiracy to finance terrorism, and financing terrorism, each carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years.
U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald in Manhattan disclosed the accusations, emphasizing Hamas’s status as a foreign terrorist organization. Hasna remains held in the United Kingdom while the legal process for his transfer to New York proceeds, and his U.S. counsel has not yet been identified.
