Two Youths Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Prince Albert Stabbing
A 27-year-old woman died after being stabbed in downtown Prince Albert, and police have charged a 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old female with second-degree murder.
Police were called to a stabbing on Prince Albert's 14th Street East at about 1:55 a.m. on Thursday, where 27-year-old Daina Gauthier was found with severe wounds and later died in hospital. The Prince Albert Police Service confirmed the case as a homicide and, with its major crimes unit, arrested a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, charging both with second-degree murder; their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Gauthier's uncle, Jonathan James Morin, recalled her as a smiling, respectful person who stood up for herself, while Earnest Deschambeault of the Prince Albert Indian and Métis Friendship Centre highlighted her kindness and the community's loss. A makeshift memorial featuring candles, flowers and tobacco appeared near the scene on Friday. The teens are scheduled to appear in provincial court on Tuesday.
