U.S. Experts to Decide If Measles Elimination Status Still Holds Amid Surge
A national verification committee will review this year’s measles data to determine whether the United States has retained its elimination status.
In mid-August, the national verification committee chaired by Noel Brewer will examine the CDC’s 2026 measles report to decide if the United States still meets elimination criteria. The review will consider public case counts—2,371 cases to date and 34 separate outbreaks—as well as detailed analyses of transmission chains, especially the year-long Utah outbreak that meets the key threshold for loss of elimination. For the first time, whole-genome sequencing will be used to trace virus movement across state lines, supplementing traditional shoe-leather epidemiology.
The committee’s findings will be sent to the Regional Verification Commission of the Pan American Health Organization, which will announce the final decision in November. Officials warn that sustained weekly cases since January 2025 and cross-border spread with Canada and Mexico raise serious concerns about endemic transmission returning.
