U.S. Industrial Surge Fueled by Gas Turbines, AI Data Centers and Reshoring

Private investment is driving a rapid expansion of U.S. manufacturing, especially in natural-gas turbines needed for AI-powered data centers and reshored production.

A privately funded stimulus is sparking a massive industrial upswing in the United States, highlighted by a surge in natural-gas turbine orders driven by AI data-center construction and a broader reshoring trend. GE Vernova’s turbine backlog more than doubled to $116 million, while Siemens Energy saw fiscal-year sales jump about 94 percent and now holds a $76 billion backlog, prompting a $1 billion expansion across several southern states and a new Mississippi plant.

President Trump’s tariff regime has revived domestic manufacturing, leading auto giants to announce new U.S. facilities and boosting shipments for carriers like Caterpillar. The Tennessee Valley Authority, after board changes, is prioritising gas-fired generation, with lead times for turbines extending to seven years. Ancillary suppliers such as Howmet Aerospace are reporting record revenues and backlogs, and freight volumes have risen sharply, reflecting the broader logistics demand supporting the boom.

Why it matters

The growth reshapes U.S. manufacturing, energy supply and job creation, influencing the economy and global supply chains.
