U.S. Quantum Industry Faces Talent Gap as Colorado Leads Workforce Push

The United States' quantum sector is hampered by a severe skills shortage, with three open jobs for every qualified worker, and Colorado is spearheading training programs to close the gap.

Commercial success in quantum computing in the United States relies heavily on engineers, technicians and skilled trades, yet the industry suffers a pronounced talent shortfall. Elevate Quantum, the Mountain West’s federally designated tech hub, notes a three-to-one ratio of open quantum positions to qualified workers, a pattern echoed by McKinsey research and MIT’s Quantum Index Report. Colorado currently employs about 3,000 quantum workers and aims for 10,000 by 2030, backed by the nation’s first bachelor’s degree in quantum systems engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, a new vacuum and cryogenic technician program, and a $40.5 million federal tech-hub grant.

State legislation HB24-1325 provides a $44 million refundable tax credit for shared research facilities and a $30 million loan-loss reserve, while the labor department routes job seekers through the standard Connecting Colorado platform. Federal measures, including the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act and the Support for Quantum Supply Chains Act, shift focus toward commercialization and workforce readiness, though lawmakers warn of competitive pressure from China. Other regions such as Illinois, Maryland and New Mexico are deploying larger financial incentives, but Colorado’s strategy centers on building a technician pipeline and early K-12 education to sustain long-term growth.
