UCSB PhD Student Found Deceased After Solo Hike in Inyo Forest

Chemical engineering doctoral student Vikram Mubayi disappeared on August 1 during a solo hike in the Big Pine Lakes area of Inyo National Forest, California. After his family lost contact with him that night, Inyo County Search & Rescue launched an operation to locate him. Two days later, rescuers retrieved his body from the lake, confirming his death.

Officials noted that the investigation has not uncovered any evidence of criminal activity. Mubayi, who grew up in Hong Kong, was noted by his family as a seasoned outdoorsperson. His vehicle remains parked at the trailhead, and his sibling posted a request for information on Reddit. The authorities have yet to issue a definitive statement on the circumstances of his death.
