UK's Chilbolton Observatory Tracks Surging Space Debris and Growing Orbital Risks
The Chilbolton Observatory in southern England is monitoring a rapid rise in space junk and related hazards, supplying data to Britain’s space command.
At Chilbolton Observatory, engineers use a large radar dish to catalogue an expanding cloud of orbital debris, including dead satellites, spent rocket stages and fragments from recent launch failures such as a SpaceX bus-sized rocket piece that struck the Moon. The European Space Agency reports over 46,000 objects totaling 17,000 tonnes circling Earth, a density that could spark a Kessler-syndrome cascade of collisions.
The observatory supplies real-time information to the National Space Operations Centre, which, backed by an £85 million UK investment, generates about 3,000 collision alerts monthly and monitors foreign spacecraft manoeuvres. Its team also prepares alerts for debris that might survive atmospheric re-entry, as seen when a Chinese rocket fragment was tracked before splashing in the Pacific. Beyond debris, Chilbolton supports planetary-defence work through the International Asteroid Warning Network, collaborating with NASA and the European Space Agency on upcoming missions like ESA’s 2029 study of asteroid Apophis. The effort underpins roughly 20 percent of the UK economy, highlighting the growing need for comprehensive space-situational awareness.
