Ukrainian fire crews arrive in southwest France to help battle massive blaze

A convoy of fifteen vehicles carrying seventy Ukrainian firefighters arrived in the Gironde department on Aug 2 after a long cross-border journey that included stops in Poland and Germany. On Aug 3 they began working in the Le Temple sector west of Bordeaux, targeting lingering embers at the edge of the burned forest to prevent the fire from flaring again. The deployment, coordinated through the European Union civil-protection mechanism, is the inaugural appearance of Ukrainian fire units in France. spokesperson Khrystyna Pertsovych highlighted the solidarity, noting Ukraine’s own wartime challenges, while Gironde fire-rescue communications officer Thomas Mimiague confirmed the welcome reception. The wildfire, which started on July 22, has already consumed roughly 42,000 hectares—about four times the size of Paris—under conditions worsened by successive heatwaves and a severe drought linked to climate change, according to a World Weather Attribution study.
