Ultrasound Patch Accelerates REM Sleep Without Drugs or Surgery
A soft, skin-attached ultrasound patch developed at the University of Texas at Austin cut the time to REM sleep by 43 minutes and lengthened REM duration by about 16 minutes in a 28-person trial.
Engineers at the University of Texas at Austin created a bioadhesive patch that combines low-intensity ultrasound with simultaneous electrophysiological monitoring, enabling noninvasive stimulation of deep brain regions that govern REM sleep. In a real-world test involving 28 volunteers, the patch reduced the latency to REM by 43 minutes and extended REM episodes by roughly 16 minutes, benefits observed in both healthy sleepers and those with mild sleep issues.
Participants described the patch as comfortable and reported minimal adverse events. The stimulation also raised heart-rate variability, an indicator of stress adaptability, and imaging showed alterations in emotion-related neural pathways. Co-principal investigators highlighted the potential to aid mood regulation and resilience, and plans are underway for larger trials targeting PTSD, depression, and chronic insomnia. The team is working with the university’s commercialization unit, Discovery to Impact, and has filed a patent for the technology.
