Understanding the Distinct Roles of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 2.4 GHz Connections

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 2.4 GHz links serve different purposes: Wi-Fi provides internet access, Bluetooth pairs audio devices, and 2.4 GHz connects many PC peripherals.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless links are often confused, yet they differ markedly in function and performance. Wi-Fi creates a wireless LAN, supports dozens of devices simultaneously, and can reach roughly 50 m, but it consumes the most power and delivers the highest bandwidth—several gigabits per second with Wi-Fi 7. Bluetooth, a true wireless technology, is optimized for low-power pairing of audio gear and other peripherals, offering speeds near 3 Mbps and a typical range of about 10 m. The 2.4 GHz band, while not a distinct technology, uses radio frequencies to connect devices like keyboards, mice, and gaming headsets, providing lower latency (1-5 ms) and higher data rates than Bluetooth, though still below 10 Mbps.

Because of its minimal power draw and stable connections, 2.4 GHz is popular for competitive gaming accessories. Choosing between them depends on whether internet access, battery life, speed or latency is the priority for the user’s equipment.
