Urban League says Trump policies push Black Americans farther from the American Dream

The National Urban League released its 2026 State of Black America report, concluding that the Trump administration’s policy agenda is widening the gap between Black Americans and the promise of the American Dream. The analysis points to the restructuring of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, the weakening of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the push for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act as direct reversals of civil-rights advances.

Marc Morial, the league’s president and CEO, stresses that these measures harm not only Black communities but also broader working-class and middle-class citizens. Contributions from Senators Angela Alsobrooks, Lisa Blunt Rochester, Raphael Warnock, Maryland Governor Wes Moore and others underscore a call for coordinated legal action and the building of economic systems independent of any single administration. While lauding Biden-era stimulus and infrastructure investments, the report warns that the current political climate threatens those gains and urges voters and consumers to act.
