USD Coyotes boast deep, versatile running back corps entering fall camp
The University of South Dakota football team opened fall camp with a highly experienced and deep group of running backs, giving the offense confidence despite uncertainties elsewhere.
The University of South Dakota kicked off its fall camp on July 29, highlighting a running back room that shows no doubt about its depth or talent. Senior Charles Pierre Jr., a former third-team All-American, returns after a strong sophomore year and a prior injury, while junior Keyondray Jones-Logan adds flexibility by lining up at various positions. Sophomores Carson Fletcher and Reid Watkins, both scholarship earners after solid freshman seasons, round out a quartet that collectively logged over 1,000 rushing yards last year.
Running backs coach Dante Warren noted that two-back sets were common in the first practice and anticipates increasing those looks to 30-35 percent of snaps. With a new quarterback and many newcomers on the line and receiving corps, the veteran backs are expected to provide both production and leadership for the young offense.
Why it matters
A strong running back group can stabilize USD's offense while other units are still developing.
