Veteran actor Scott Hylands, known for Night Heat, passes away at 83

Scott Hylands, the Canadian actor best remembered for playing Detective Kevin “O.B.” O’Brien on the 1980s cop series Night Heat, died on July 29 at the age of 83. Hylands, a longtime resident of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, had been fighting acute myeloid leukemia since his diagnosis in October 2021.

After decades of playing antagonists in U.S. television, he returned north to star as a heroic police officer in Night Heat, which aired simultaneously in Canada on CTV and in the United States on one outlet. The show ran for four seasons and 96 episodes from 1985 to 1989, often beating late-night competition in several markets. Following the series, Hylands continued to work in North American television, appearing in titles such as NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Due South, Stargate SG-1, The Outer Limits, V, Once Upon a Time, Wynonna Earp, and notably as Ennis Stuccy in the third season of Fargo. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Veronica, his son Luke, who announced the death, and his daughter Rebecca.
