Victorian Liberals pledge weekly rubbish pickup if elected, denounce fortnightly service
The Victorian Liberal Party has promised to reinstate weekly general waste collection across the state should it win the November election, criticizing the current fortnightly schedule as unacceptable.
Victorian Liberals have pledged to restore weekly general waste collection statewide if they secure victory in the upcoming November election, with party leader Jess Wilson calling the fortnightly system in her local area “disgusting.” Wilson said a future Liberal-National administration would require councils to provide weekly service and would apply the council rate cap to waste charges, preventing any increase for residents.
The current fortnightly schedule has been adopted by a number of Melbourne councils, many of which point to the rollout of weekly food organics and garden organics (Fogo) collections as the driver behind the shift. Some councils, such as Whitehorse, have chosen to retain weekly pickups, noting that food waste makes up a large share of bin weight. The Liberals also intend to review the state’s landfill levy and the upcoming statewide four-bin system that includes a new purple glass bin.
Why it matters
Weekly waste collection affects household convenience and costs, making it a key local issue in the upcoming state election.
