Wales faces nation-wide drought as July heads toward record dryness

Natural Resources Wales confirmed that a drought now covers all of Wales, with July on track to become the driest in 190 years. Persistent heat has caused river levels to plunge to historic lows, soils to dry out, and wildfires to spread, threatening wildlife, agriculture and forestry. The agency had previously limited the alert to northern and parts of mid Wales, but expanded it after observing worsening conditions.

The nationwide status will trigger enhanced river surveillance and more stringent advice for households and businesses on water consumption. Despite the environmental warning, Welsh water companies report that reservoir levels have held up thanks to a relatively wet beginning to the year. No immediate shortage to domestic water supplies is expected.
