WalletHub ranks top and bottom U.S. cities for renters based on affordability and quality of life
WalletHub evaluated 182 U.S. markets and identified the most and least renter-friendly cities using affordability and quality-of-life metrics.
WalletHub examined 182 metropolitan areas, scoring them on a 100-point scale that combined rental market affordability and overall quality of life across 21 metrics. Arizona emerged strongly, with Scottsdale, Gilbert and Chandler ranking in the top three, benefitting from low rent-to-income ratios and high livability scores. Conversely, cities like Detroit, Cleveland and Jackson occupied the bottom of the list, reflecting poor performance in both affordability and quality-of-life categories.
The study highlighted that most renters in the top cities allocate less than 22% of their earnings to rent. Rankings for the lowest cities fell well below the midpoint in both evaluated dimensions. The findings underscore regional disparities in rental conditions across the United States.
