Warming Atlantic waters drive blacktip sharks farther north, study warns
Researchers say rising sea temperatures are extending blacktip shark migrations up the East Coast, bringing them closer to beaches farther north than before.
Long-term aerial and satellite monitoring by Florida Atlantic University shows blacktip sharks are shifting their seasonal range northward along the Atlantic seaboard as ocean temperatures climb. By late summer, many individuals reach Long Island, New York, a region where beachgoers historically saw few of these sharks. The species stays close to the shoreline—typically within 50 meters—making near-shore encounters more common.
Researchers also highlight that sediment-laden water from beach-renourishment efforts can impair hunting, potentially changing shark movements and increasing incidental human contact. Despite the expanded presence, experts stress that dangerous interactions remain extremely rare. They advise swimmers and surfers not to avoid the water, emphasizing the low risk while acknowledging the ecological implications of a warming climate.
