Warner Bros. faces deadline to secure Barbie sequel talent before rights revert

Warner Bros. must finalize agreements with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig by December or lose the Barbie sequel rights to Mattel.

Negotiations between Warner Bros. and the principal talent of the 2023 blockbuster have stalled, with a December cutoff looming before Mattel can retake the sequel rights. The studio has presented profit-share deals linked to specific box-office milestones to Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and director Greta Gerwig. According to reports, Warner Bros.

Discovery chief David Zaslav rejected the offer as too generous, a characterization the studio’s co-chairs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca deny, stating the talent’s agents declined the May proposal and have not submitted a counteroffer. Warner Bros. maintains it holds a rights agreement with Mattel and has made multiple substantial offers. The sequel concept, developed by Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach, has been in early development stages since 2024. The original film earned $1.5 billion worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Why it matters
