Wearable health tech is advancing fast, but the medical system lags behind

Smartwatches now track dozens of physiological signals and can flag early illness, yet integrating this data into routine care remains a major hurdle.

From simple step counters in the 1960s to today’s smartwatches that monitor heart rate, stress, sleep stages and blood oxygen, wearable technology has become a sophisticated health sensor. Scientists like Michael Snyder and Jessilyn Dunn note that many of these sensors use the same principles as hospital equipment, and studies show they can detect infections before symptoms appear. However, the sheer volume of data poses a challenge; clinicians lack time and tools to interpret raw readings, prompting researchers to develop digital biomarkers that summarize key changes.

The U.S. healthcare system, built around episodic visits, offers little incentive for continuous monitoring, and regulatory gray zones leave many advanced features classified as wellness rather than medical devices. Privacy concerns also arise because wearable data is not covered by HIPAA unless integrated into medical records. Until standards, reimbursement models and integration pathways improve, the promise of wearables for preventive care will remain largely unrealized.
