Webb Telescope Unveils Unprecedented Infrared Detail of the Lion Nebula
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has released high-resolution infrared images of planetary nebula NGC 2392, revealing dust clumps and ionized gas unseen by Hubble.
Using its Near-Infrared Camera and Mid-Infrared Instrument, the James Webb Space Telescope captured a detailed view of NGC 2392, popularly called the Lion Nebula. Compared with Hubble’s 2000 visible-light image, Webb’s infrared data expose compact dust clumps, a faint ionized-gas haze, and the illuminated interior of a dust shell that forms the nebula’s “mane.” The central remnant, a hot white dwarf, emits radiation that drives the expansion of the gas bubble shaping the lion’s face.
These findings illustrate how lower-mass stars shed outer layers to create planetary nebulae, contributing much of the universe’s dust. Researchers estimate the nebula will fully disperse in roughly 10,000 years, a brief span astronomically. The images underscore Webb’s role in advancing our understanding of stellar death and the lifecycle of cosmic material.
