Weight-loss drugs linked to lower breast cancer recurrence, surgeon says

At the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago, researchers reported that patients taking GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy experienced lower rates of breast-cancer recurrence. Dr. Loren Rourke, a board-certified breast-cancer surgeon, said the link likely stems from the drugs’ weight-loss effects, which improve prognosis by reducing body-mass index, decreasing estrogen production from adipose tissue, and mitigating chronic inflammation that fuels tumors.

She emphasized that current evidence is observational and does not establish a direct therapeutic effect on cancer cells. The surgeon noted that the findings have spurred interest in launching randomized controlled trials to test causality. For individuals struggling with obesity despite diet and exercise, she recommends a conversation with a physician about GLP-1 therapy, especially post-menopausal women who may gain extra advantage. Nonetheless, patients should not start the drugs solely to prevent breast cancer until stronger proof emerges.
