The San Sebastián Film Festival confirmed that Werner Herzog will be the recipient of the Donostia Award at its 74th edition in September. The honor will be presented during the opening gala, followed by a screening of his latest work, “Bucking Fastard,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Festival officials highlighted Herzog’s six-decade legacy, noting his influence on contemporary cinema through roughly 80 films that explore extreme situations and human contradictions.

They cited his “Ecstatic Truth” philosophy, which seeks a poetic dimension beyond factual observation. Herzog’s notable titles include “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo,” “Grizzly Man,” and “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.” The festival runs from September 18 to 26.
