The decision responds to a letter from Ratna Debnath, the victim’s mother and current BJP MLA from Panihati, after repeated challenges to the CBI investigation by the family and the Calcutta High Court.
While three major facets of the case— the assault, alleged hospital vandalism on Aug 14, 2024, and financial irregularities— remain under CBI jurisdiction, the state will examine who organized the swift cremation at the Panihati crematorium, a process signed by former MLA Nirmal Ghosh, councillor Somnath Dey, and neighbor Sanjib Mukherjee. The Barrackpore Police commissioner has been instructed to lead this fresh probe. A two-minute silence was observed across government health facilities, and the chief minister pledged annual “Abhaya Day” events to honor the victim.
