West Indies miss direct berth for 2027 ODI World Cup after Afghanistan win

Afghanistan’s triumph over Ireland in the second ODI of their series confirmed the team’s direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, simultaneously eliminating the West Indies from automatic entry. The West Indies, currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI standings, fall short of the top-nine threshold that determines the seven direct spots, with the cut-off set for September 30, 2026. Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe already hold automatic places, and Bangladesh sits just ahead of the West Indies in the rankings.

The Caribbean side’s last chance to improve its standing comes in a three-match series in India in September and October, but even winning both games cannot lift them into the qualifying bracket. This marks the third consecutive World Cup cycle in which the former two-time champions have failed to earn direct entry, having missed out in 2019 and 2023. Consequently, West Indies and Ireland must now pursue the longer qualification route to reach the tournament scheduled for October-November in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
