Which Companies Offer the Best Career Growth for Tech Professionals

A study by Burning Glass Institute and the Schultz Family Foundation evaluated promotion, retention and salary data for millions of workers, highlighting top and bottom tech employers.

Burning Glass Institute and the Schultz Family Foundation examined the employment histories of 12 million workers across 1,750 leading U.S. employers between 2019 and 2024, using data from LinkedIn and Glassdoor. Each occupation at each firm was rated on three metrics: likelihood of promotion within five years, three-year retention rate, and compensation level. The analysis identified Amazon and Salesforce as the clear leaders for software engineers, data scientists and related tech roles, offering top-quartile pay, promotion chances and tenure.

Companies such as Adobe, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Uber and Meta displayed varied performance, excelling in some metrics but lagging in others. Insurers and non-tech firms like Liberty Mutual, USAA, John Deere, Northwestern Mutual and the Mayo Clinic also provided strong career prospects, especially for retention. In contrast, Goldman Sachs and Deloitte were flagged as weak environments for tech talent, with limited advancement and higher turnover. The findings give job seekers a data-driven guide to targeting employers that support long-term tech careers.
