White Sox intensify hunt for starting pitchers ahead of trade deadline

Chicago is actively exploring several starting-pitcher options as the July 31 trade deadline approaches, aiming to boost its rotation for a playoff push.

Chicago’s front office has cast a wide net for starting-pitching talent as the trade deadline looms, hoping to add a quality arm that can help return the team to the postseason for the first time since 2021. Sources say the Sox are weighing Toronto’s Shane Bieber, a former opponent from his Cleveland days, and Baltimore’s Trevor Rogers, who has posted a strong 1.85 ERA over his last seven starts. The club is also targeting Los Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers and New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes, whose contract includes a player option for 2027.

White Sox scouts were present at Holmes’ rehab start and at Detroit’s Tarik Skubal’s outing, though the latter is unlikely to be a primary target. With both Bieber and Rogers set to become free agents after the 2026 season, Chicago is weighing the value of a controllable acquisition versus a rental deal depending on market dynamics.
