White Sox raise Ozzie Guillén's No. 13 to the rafters in tribute
The Chicago White Sox retired Ozzie Guillén’s number 13 before Saturday’s game against Cleveland.
In a ceremony held before the White Sox’s game versus Cleveland, Chicago retired the number 13 of Ozzie Guillén, the franchise’s 13th honoree and its first former manager to be so recognized. Guillén, now a colorful analyst for the team’s telecasts, spent 13 of his 16 major-league seasons with Chicago, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1985, a Gold Glove in 1990 and three All-Star selections before ending his playing career in 2000.
He later managed the Sox from 2004 to 2011, guiding them to the 2005 World Series title and posting a 678-617 record. Former teammates A.J. Pierzynski and Paul Konerko introduced him, while chairman Jerry Reinsdorf praised his impact; his wife Ibis and three sons were seated on the stage.
Guillén spoke about his Venezuelan heritage, noting that 13 is considered a lucky number in his country and referencing other Venezuelan players who wear it. He also recalled his brief, controversial stint managing the Miami Marlins in 2012.
Why it matters
Retiring Guillén’s number celebrates a key figure in White Sox history and highlights the team’s cultural ties.
