Wide receiver Colton Dowell claimed by Steelers after 49ers release

Colton Dowell, a 27-year-old, 6-foot-3, 212-pound wide receiver, was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on August 6 as the team cleared a roster spot for offensive lineman Kion Smith. The Pittsburgh Steelers subsequently claimed Dowell off waivers, giving him a new opportunity as they adjust their receiving depth. Dowell originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round selection by the Tennessee Titans in the 2023 draft and later signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers in January.

His only NFL playing time came during his rookie season with Tennessee, where he appeared in ten games, caught one pass for three yards, and logged 159 special-teams snaps. More experienced receivers on the 49ers' depth chart limited his chances, leaving him as the odd man out. The Steelers hope the addition will bolster their receiving corps amid ongoing roster tweaks.
