Wildfires threaten Bordeaux's wine trade and regional economy

A blaze the size of four Parises has ravaged the Gironde region, prompting mass evacuations and destroying forests near Bordeaux. Tourism, once the only growth engine for Bordeaux’s wine industry, is now hampered by government appeals to avoid the area, a stance the city mayor rejects, noting that museums and restaurants stay open. The chamber reports that 39,000 businesses, including aerospace firms such as Airbus, Dassault and Thales, are feeling the pinch, with a 37% rise in liquidations compared to last year. Energy price hikes and a recent poll showing 94% of firms struggling add to the gloom. While the fires have affected only a small slice of the region’s total area, the reputational damage to the world-renowned wine zone could be lasting.
