William Shatner and Daughter Survive Stage-4 Melanoma and Aggressive Breast Cancer
The 95-year-old actor disclosed that a dismissed lump turned out to be stage-4 melanoma, while his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch fought a fast-spreading HER2-positive breast cancer; both are now cancer-free.
During a recent interview, William Shatner recounted how a physician initially brushed off a facial lump as a harmless salivary gland, only for a friend’s second opinion to uncover a stage-4 malignant melanoma that had already metastasized to his brain and lungs. He subsequently had the tumor removed and completed a two-year course of immunotherapy. In parallel, his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch found a breast lump a year earlier, ignored a clean mammogram, and insisted on further evaluation, which revealed HER2-positive breast cancer that had breached the breast wall and entered chest lymph nodes.
Her treatment involved months of chemotherapy, thirty radiation sessions, a double mastectomy and a year of immunotherapy. Both parent and child announced they were cancer-free by late 2024, and Shatner continues to work on books, a podcast and music projects.
